The acai berry is a fruit of the acai palm tree. It is native to Americans. Similar to cranberries, acai berries have much higher antioxidant activity than blueberries and strawberries. The pulp/skin powder of acai berries reportedly had the highest Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) of all fruits and vegetables, 10 times more than red grapes. Acai berries are high in iron, calcium, fiber, and vitamin A. They also contain anthocyanin compounds such as resveratrol, cyanide, and ferulic acid, which not only give fruits and vegetables their distinctive color, but also combine with flavonoids to protect the body against harmful free radicals. In fact, acai berries contain 10 to 30 times more anthocyanins than red wine. Acai also has the advantage of having beneficial fatty acids such as oleic acid (also found in olive oil) and a healthy amount of dietary fiber that keeps your system running smoothly.
